At The King’s Table: We like Mephibosheth…

“Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake…”
2 Samuel 9:7

Like Mephibosheth, we are lame in both legs.

Not always visibly, not always physically, but deeply aware of our limitations. There are places we cannot go, battles we cannot fight, standards we cannot meet. Life has marked us, and in many ways, we walk with a limp.

And yet… the summons comes from the palace.

Not because we are strong.
Not because we are worthy.
Not because we have proven ourselves in the King’s army.

But because of a covenant.

Long before Mephibosheth ever knew his own name, a covenant had already been established between David and Jonathan, a bond of love, loyalty, and promise. Mephibosheth did not earn it. He did not fight for it. He did not even understand it.

Yet it called him out of hiding.

From Lo-debar, a place of lack, obscurity, and forgottenness, into the presence of the King.

This is Grace.

We, too, were not present when the covenant was made. We did not stand at the cross. We did not negotiate the terms. But through Jesus Christ, a covenant was sealed, one that speaks louder than our weakness, deeper than our brokenness, and stronger than our past.

So the King calls us “son.”

Not servant.
Not outsider.
Not tolerated guest.

Son.

And here is the mystery:

Mephibosheth could not fight in the army, but he had a permanent seat at the table.
He could not earn honor, but he was given dignity.
His brokenness was real, but it was covered by proximity to the King.

“…and he ate continually at the king’s table like one of the king’s sons.”
2 Samuel 9:11

This is where striving ends.

We are not sustained by our ability to stand; we are sustained by where we sit.

At the King’s table, our lameness is no longer the headline. The tablecloth of grace covers what we cannot fix. The nearness of the King redefines who we are.

We may not fight in the King’s army,
but we live in the King’s presence.

We did not earn our place,
but we cannot be removed from it.

Because the covenant speaks. A covenant established at creation

Revelation 13:8……. the lamb who was slain from the creation of the World

And it says: You are a son…
You belong here.
